Thanks, Bart for this piece. It's very funny (whoops! I almost said "damned funny") and insightful. As an agnostic Jew, I have a vague feeling of discomfort in churches.
I once rehearsed a show in an Episcopal church. The room had bookshelves and I browsed when offstage. There were some Word War II era texts that said things about Jews that were somewhere between uncomplimentary and hurtful. I can't imagine how impressionable young minds reading that stuff could fail to harbor unpleasant feelings about Jews.
At a funeral many years ago in a rural Lutheran church, the minister began with "God bless all the gentiles." I didn't know what that meant, but it put me ill at ease.
Your frankness and humor serve your point very well.
