Alice in Wonderland - with a Detroit flavor

DETROIT - A fantastical adventure awaits young and old alike this summer at the Hilberry Theatre. Join Alice as she tumbles down the rabbit hole into the magical world of Wonderland. There she will meet the grinning Cheshire Cat, have a tea party with the Mad Hatter and play croquet with the Queen of Hearts. Based on Lewis Carroll's classic tale, Alice in Wonderland is a treat for the whole family. The show starts at 10:30 a.m. and runs June 23 - July 11.

In Lewis Carroll's original version of Alice in Wonderland, Alice begins her adventure in England during the mid-1800s, but director Matt Foss has decided to modernize Alice. Wanting to make Alice more relatable, Foss has adapted the story to begin in the streets of Detroit. She will still journey to Wonderland and meet the beloved, nonsensical characters, but the production will have a creative, urban flair. According to scenic designer Alan Batkiewicz, "We will be turning the ordinary into the extraordinary." The set will be constructed out of found, recycled objects: milk crates, pipes, trash bags, aluminum cans and scaffolding, to name a few. Kids and adults are invited to actively use their imaginations in this spectacular creation, which will also include an array of music, acrobatics and dance. Take a break and escape from reality to enjoy the topsy-turvy world of Wonderland.

Alice will be played by Ciarah Mosley and Ashley Shamoon. The ensemble cast includes recent Hilberry graduates Dylan Stuckey and Aaron Kirby, and Bonstelle graduates Steven West, Jaye Stellini and Jennifer O’Phee. The following characters will make an appearance: the White Rabbit, Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum, the Caterpillar, the Cheshire Cat, the Mad Hatter, Humpty Dumpty and the Queen of Hearts.

The production team includes Nancy Florkowski and Meriah Sage as co-directors, Don Hunter as stage manager, George Abud as composer, Jeremy Mossman as music director, Alan Batkiewicz as scenic designer, Corey Globke as costume designer, Bobby Tacoma as lighting designer, Christopher Wade as sound designer, Mary Anderson as puppet master, and Adam Crinson as properties master.
