By Robert Delaney
The differences in how men and women think is very humorously explored in The Male Intellect: An Oxymoron? at the Century Theatre in downtown Detroit.
But wait, isn't that what the other show playing on alternate weeks at the Century - Defending the Caveman is also about? Well, yes, sort of. In The Male Intellect writer and performer Robert Dubac takes his own unique and amusing look at the subject through the eyes of a man who has to try to figure out why his fiance put their relationship on hold.
Under pressure to understand what she wants by the deadline she has set, he reminisces about the formative influences in his life, basically an array of male-chauvinist characters - all of them also played by Dubac.
This is pretty funny stuff, as is Caveman. So, which to choose? Well, some people will probably go see - and enjoy - both shows. But Caveman deals more with married life, while Intellect is more about dating.
Also Dubac is arguably edgier, less reticent to use raw language. He also pushes the envelope a bit when he touches on religion. OK, I laughed, but was a little uneasy about it. This is apparently an area he intends to go further into in a future show.
But there is no question Dubac is a talented comic, whose insights into male-female relationships will keep local audiences laughing during the show's Detroit run.
