Dr. Larabee – (CAST)

Batty Ruth – (CAST)

Drunk Willie – (CAST)

Gail – Akeelah’s mother. Female. 30s-40s. African American. A nurse. Tough-loving. Present, but aloof.

Dylan’s Dad- Male. 30s+. Asian American. Severe. Firm. Doubles as several ensemble roles.

Reggie – 18-20s. African American. Akeelah’s older brother. A bit of a slacker. Makes poor choices, but his heart is in the right place.

Other Ensemble Roles: DJ Rule/Judge/TV Announcer/Pronouncer


Akeelah Anderson – teens. African American. A spelling enthusiast. A kind-hearted girl with a smart mouth. Highly motivated. Guarded, with a capacity for vulnerability.

Reggie – 18-20s. African American. Akeelah’s older brother. A bit of a slacker. Makes poor choices, but his heart is in the right place.

Georgia – Teens. African American. Akeelah’s best friend. Unconditionally supportive. Emotionally available, but a bit sassy.

Izzy – 11, a girl terrified of her own shadow. Mostly non-speaking role, but should have a strong stage presence.

Dylan – Teens. Asian American. Arrogant. Spelling Bee champion.

Javier- Teens. Latino. A gregarious kid with a preppy style.

Ratchet Rhonda – Teens. African American. Akeelah’s biggest tormentor. Rude. School bully. Any Two Akeelah sides.+ a poem or rap of choice

Trish – Teens. Any Ethnicity. Suburban. Socially awkward. Admires Akeelah and Georgia.

Ensemble – 3-4 actors, open gender/ethnicity. Physically strong. Should have a good sense of rhythm and/or some musical ability.
Prepare a poem, song, or rap of choice.

Actors will be asked to prepare sides from the script for specific roles. Audition material can be downloaded here.

Akeelah has a crazy passion for words: the more abstruse and labyrinthine, the better. But this gift is almost overwhelmed by the challenge of her daily life in a tough, Chicago neighborhood. Akeelah’s aptitude earns her a spot in the National Spelling Bee, which inspires the people in her neighborhood with her courage and tenacity.
