A Bright New Boise is set in the corporate break room of a craft store in Idaho. Will fled his rural hometown after a scandal at his Evangelical church. Now employed at Hobby Lobby, he attempts to rekindle a relationship with Alex, his son he gave up for adoption several years ago. Alex works side-by-side Leroy, his adopted brother, Anna, a woman who reads bland fiction, and their manager, Pauline, who tries to find order in the chaos of small business. Samuel D. Hunter’s A Bright New Boise is an earnest comedy about the meager profits and beige-tinted impossibility of modern faith.
Directed by Professor of Theater, Arthur J. Beer, Ph.D., the Detroit Mercy Theatre Company’s cast — a mix of resident professionals with students from the acclaimed University of Detroit Mercy acting program — includes professionals Joel Frazee as Will and Maggie Lorenzetti as Pauline. Students include Nina Carlson as Anna, Preston Cornelius as Alex and Christian Plonka as Leroy.
The production team features assistant professor Melinda Pacha as the scenic and costume designer, Seth Amadei as lighting designer, Alan Devlin as technical director, and associate professor Greg Grobis as managing director. Other members of the production team are Damian Torres-Bottello, S.J., as the outreach and audience development coordinator, Evans Tasiopoulos as the ticket office coordinator and photographer, and student Dalton Hahn as stage manager.
