Fisher Theatre

The Fisher Theatre opened as a movie and vaudeville house on Nov. 11, 1928. It featured Mayan-Indian art, banana trees, a goldfish pond and wandering macaws that audience members fed by hand.

In 1961 David Tobias Nederlander and his sons began managing and booking productions for the newly redesigned Fisher Theatre, which was a success from the start. Here they built the country’s largest subscription audience. The “new” Fisher Theatre is adorned with marble, Indian rosewood, walnut paneling, and crystal and bronze decorative work. The origional 3,500 seats were scaled down to 2,089 to ensure an intimate atmosphere with optimal sightlines and excellent acoustics.

Over the last 55  years, the Fisher Theatre has been a favorite venue of many of Broadway’s brightest stars, including Mary Martin, Carol Channing, Joel Grey, Bernadette Peters, Lynn Redgrave and world premieres of “Hello Dolly,” “Fiddler on the Roof,” “Sweet Charity” and “Goldren.” In recent times the Fisher Theatre hosted the start of the National Tours of Billy Joel’s “Movin’ Out” and “Disney’s High School Musical!”

This year, it will host the US premiere of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s “Love Never Dies.”
