Tibbits Opera House

Built in 1882, Tibbits Opera House is among the oldest theaters in Michigan. Rich in history and ambiance, the theater features an exquisitly restored French Second Empire façade. The intimate 499-seat theater offers nearly perfect acoustics and great entertainment year round. It is the center for the arts in Branch County.

Tibbits Summer Theatre has filled the historic stage of the Tibbits Opera House with the excitement of great professional theater by its resident summer stock company since 1964. It attracts thousands of people through its doors each season, and has built an outstanding reputation. USA Today called it one of “10 great places to see the lights way off Broadway.”

With an artistic mission of presenting the best possible theater for Branch County and the surrounding area, each season is a balancing act of the classics of musical theater and some of the best writing of the last 20 years. Generations of families have created memories through Tibbits Summer Theatre and its companion, Popcorn Theatre, which features the professional company in shows specifically geared toward children and families. Tibbits hires and assembles the entire company: actors, musicians, directors, designers and technical crew.

Through the rest of the year, Tibbits Entertainment Series offers additional self-produced shows, a variety of touring performers, and something for every taste.  Tibbits Young Audiences offers programs both for and by area youth, as well as educational programs and opportunities for students to develop their interest in the arts. In addition to the programs sponsored by Tibbits, the theater is used extensively by community groups presenting plays, musicals, concerts, dance programs, pageants and variety shows. With the addition of weddings and private events, the theater is busy nearly every weekend offering numerous opportunities to attend or participate in the performing arts.

In addition to the performing arts, there is also an active visual arts presence through the Tibbits Art Gallery. Arts Alive, an organization devoted to furthering opportunities in the visual arts for the community, hosts activities and exhibits that are open to artists in all medium. They present Art Walks in the downtown in the fall and spring, and have developed several community art projects. They present a variety of exhibits in the Tibbits Art Gallery, each featuring a fine array of regional artists.

There is truly something for everyone at Tibbits.
