Saugatuck—Saugatuck Center for the Arts (400 Culver Street, Saugatuck) will offer camps and classes ranging from Toddler Tuesdays to painting workshops for adults.

Veteran instructor Andrea Tama brings her talents from the Bloomfield Art Center in Birmingham, Michigan, to the SCA for a mixed media workshop for adults July 11-14, 9:00 a.m.–noon. Participants will create a floral and botanical inspired, layered painting using a variety of collage techniques; playing with patterned and textured papers, drawing, and acrylic paint. Space is limited for this workshop.

The SCA’s summer schedule for 3-13 year olds includes single day classes, multi-day camps, and off site field trips and a wide variety of creative experiences. All camps and classes begin with yoga in the SCA’s rain garden and include healthy snacks. Classes are designed to teach children through a variety of learning styles by thoughtful instructors.

The SCA also offers full and partial scholarships.  Go to sc4a.org to download the application form.

Some of the summer offerings for children include:

  • Small hands make for big art during five “Toddler Tuesday” events every other Tuesday, June 21-August 16.
  • Chef Christine Ferris teaches kids about Hawaiian flavors and helps them make delicious snacks during her June 22 “Kids Can Cook!” class.
  • Take a field trip to Groundswell Farms July 25 to harvest vegetables, prepare lunch and do a hands-on art project.
  • Student’s paint “en plein air” (outdoors!) with Anne Corlett on July 26. Anne also gives a private tour of her works in the “Easel on Down the Road” exhibition at the SCA.
  • Artist in Residence Sofia Ramirez Hernandez shares her love of drawing and poetry and helps children make their own books and write their own verses during her July 20 workshop.
  • Learn about how toys are invented – and make your own cool creation – during the Toy S.T.E.A.M. class with Jon Vanderbeek August 17-19.
  • “We’re studying and celebrating creativity using West Michigan and Saugatuck as our inspiration,” says SCA Executive Director Kristin Armstrong. “We’re very fortunate to have an array of talented guest instructors joining us and a rock star education staff leading these unique experiences for community members.”
