WEST BLOOMFIELD—JET will host “The Capitol Steps” at its annual gala fundraiser on September 18, 2017 from 6:00-9:00 p.m. at Temple Israel in West Bloomfield.

“The Capitol Steps” is a nationally renowned political satire group that rose to fame in Washington DC where they have performed weekly for the past 30 years presenting their own unique brand of political humor through sketch comedy and original music. This performance in Temple Israel’s newly renovated auditorium features a strolling dinner and dessert catered by The Epicurean Group.

The gala is to benefit JET’s youth outreach programs that feature anti-bullying plays for K-12 students and an annual production of The Diary of Anne Frank.  JET’s Dorfman Family Foundation Youth Theatre has been touring schools with original anti-bullying plays for more than 20 years with an annual student audience of more than 30,000–and a lifetime audience of more than 500,000. Many of the schools are in areas of Detroit, and each year JET reaches out to its supporters to raise money to provide these plays at little or no cost.

“Our individual donors and larger benefactors such as the Farber Family Foundation and the Stephen and Nancy Grand Foundation have allowed us to bring a theatrical experience to children who have never experienced live theatre before,” says Christopher Bremer, JET’s executive director, who thinks that the anti-bullying message imparted by the plays is more important than ever–as apparently, so do the participating schools. “In the past year, we have increased our touring productions by 100% with more than 100 separate performances on tour,” says Bremer, “and our annual gala event goes a long way toward helping provide these shows where they are needed most.”

The response to this event has exceeded the seating available at the JET’s 127 seat theatre, so Temple Israel’s 900 seat venue was enlisted to accommodate the demand. Patron tickets are $180 and up and include strolling dinner, premium seating for “The Capitol Steps” and dessert. General admission is $65 for general seating for “The Capitol Steps” and dessert. Generation admission for those under 35 (with ID) is $35 for general seating for “The Capitol Steps” and dessert.
