Black and Brown Theatre celebrates artists of color with annual Bricolage Awards
DETROIT—Black and Brown Theatre, a local professional theater for artists of color, will celebrate local theater artists of color with their annual Bricolage Awards on Monday May 21 at 7:00 pm at Bank Suey, (10345 Joseph Campau Ave, Hamtramck). Admission is free and open to the public. Street parking is available.
The Bricolage Awards were established in 2017 to honor and celebrate theater artists of color in Metro Detroit with various awards including Best Actress and Best Supporting Actor. This year, the festival will also honor early career artists as the future of our theater scene, allies who support theater artists of color, and actors who have worked for theater companies outside of Black and Brown Theatre.
Local actress and nominee, K Edmonds, says “…to think that people that I admire and enjoy their work also enjoy mine..! This whole experience has been A-MAZ-ING, and I am truly honored!” Fellow nominee, Assata Haki says, “Black and Brown Theatre has nominated me for Best Supporting Actress… Wowwwwww…. I’m so humbled…It’s the thought…not a win… that’s embracing my heart and soul right now…”
For many theater artists of color this awards ceremony is a chance to bring unity within the community.
