Opera MODO in ‘Cage Match’ 3/31

News March 27, 2019 David Kiley

Detroit, Mich.–Diva Cage Match, a sing-off showdown to support Opera MODO and Downtown Boxing Gym Youth Program, is descending on Detroit at 7 p.m. Sunday, March 31 at Downtown Boxing Gym Youth Program.

The perfect fusion of world-class opera and competitive sports, Diva Cage Match pits three pairs of opera singers against each other for three rounds of knockdown, drag-out vocal competition. Six singers will enter the ring, but only one will be crowned the ultimate Opera Diva Champion.

Diva Cage Match was conceived and originally produced by Out of The Box Opera in Minneapolis, Minnesota. “When I heard about Diva Cage Match, I immediately thought of a co-presentation with Downtown Boxing Gym Youth Program,” said Danielle Wright, Opera MODO’s founder and artistic director. “I have volunteered with Downtown Boxing Gym Youth Program for years. Like MODO, they encourage growth in young people by providing crucial resources and opportunities for participation.

This presentation is a perfect fit for both organizations, and the competition will make for an exciting fundraiser.” Local singers Leslie Mason, Nicole Joseph, and Katrina van Maanen of the “Home Team” will go up against out-of-town singers Jennifer Cresswell, Emily Barnash, and Mary Martin of the “Away Team.” A panel of four judges, Michelle Johnson Major, The Simone Vitale Band, Jason Hall, and Maher Hachem, will rate the divas and ultimately decide which vocal powerhouse deserves to win the match.

Tickets are available at three price points: VIP at $60 per person, General Admission at $40 per person, and Standing Room at $20 per person. Tickets may be purchased online at https://bit.ly/2WoTgNM. Diva Cage Match will take place at 7 p.m. Sunday, March 31, 2019 at Downtown Boxing Gym Youth Program, located at 6445 E. Vernor Highway, Detroit, Michigan.
