The 2019 Wilde Awards At The Hilberry August 26
DETROIT, Mich.–The 2019 Wilde Awards, the premier statewide award show for Michigan’s professional theater community and industry, will be held August 26 at The Hilberry Theatre here.
“We are very pleased that we have been able to partner with Wayne State University School of Maggie Allesee Department of Theatre and Dance to put on this year’s Wilde Awards,” said editor and publisher David Kiley. “And our principal sponsor, Pride Source Media is again with us as well,” said Kiley. Pride Source Media is the publisher of Between The Lines.
The networking and social hour will begin at 6PM and the award program will start by 7:30 PM. The awards will be highlighted by performances from the 2018-2020 season. The primary host for the show will be Roy Sexton. Music Director for the show will be Brian E. Buckner.
The Wilde Awards – named in honor of 19th century playwright Oscar Wilde – honors the best productions, performances and technical work produced or presented by professional theaters across the state. Nominations are based on reviews written by EncoreMichigan.com’s team of professional critics.
The number of awards varies slightly from year to year. But each year the program honors categories including: Best Drama, Best Musical, Best Comedy, Best Opera, Best of the Bard, Best Theater for Young Audiences, and many more.
The Wilde Awards, founded in 2002, is an important measure of recognition for Michigan’s professional theater community. Because of cutbacks in the newspaper business and mainstream media in general, EncoreMichigan is the only media outlet that covers professional theater throughout the state of Michigan–previews, reviews, audition announcements, news and more.
The criteria for a production being considered for Wilde Awards is as follows:
Only shows produced or presented by Michigan’s professional theaters and opera companies – both Equity and non-Equity, large and small – and reviewed by EncoreMichigan.com’s critics are eligible for a Wilde Awards nomination.
Only professional productions that meet the following criteria are eligible to be reviewed by EncoreMichigan.com: Productions that run (A) four consecutive days or more, or (B) two weekends or more.
In the 2018-19 season (June 1-May 31), EncoreMichigan reviewed 214 show openings.
Both locally produced shows and national touring productions are eligible for nominations.
This year’s Wilde Award nominations will be announced on EncoreMichigan’s TheatreTalkPlus podcast on June 15, with the posting of the nominations coming on June 16.
Ticket details and online advanced ticket buying information will be forthcoming on June 15.
Mark your calendars.
