Chelsea Wooley’s ‘The Mountain’ at Matrix January 18
DETROIT—The Mountain by Canadian playwright Chelsea Woolley, is the first in a series of three international children’s plays produced at Matrix Theatre Comany, in partnership with the acclaimed Spinning Dot International Children’s Theatre. The Mountain will run Saturday, January 18 at 11:30 am. The play is immediately followed by a special story-making workshop.
Set on a Canadian playground, The Mountain deals with anti-immigration feelings from the perspective of two eight-year-olds, one a quiet Canadian boy performed by Nathan Corliss and the other a spirited middle eastern girl performed by Aya Aziz. It provides dialogue with playful yet poignant realism between the two primary characters. As they embark on their imaginary adventures, the banter shared between the children deepens and transforms not only their friendship, but their views of the world. Through these characters, Woolley is able to touch upon the universals of childhood, the need for home, friendship, trust, and a deeper understanding of otherness.
“The show is most enjoyed by children ages five and up,” said Jenny Koppera, Spinning Dot founder and executive director.
Tickets, which include play and workshop, are $15 each. Visit www.matrixtheatre.org or call 313 967 0599 to order tickets or obtain further information.
