Encore Musical Theatre Holds Season Auditions 06/24

Encore Musical Theatre is holding auditions for its forthcoming season, which will include Fun Home, The Secret Garden, Guys and Dolls and he Pirates of Penzance.

Guys and Dolls is expected to be directed by Tony Award winning director and designer Tony Walton, who previously directed My Fair Lady at the theatre.

ALISON

A lesbian cartoonist, Alison guides us through the story of her life as she explores her childhood and her relationship with her late father, Bruce.

Age: 30-49

Gender: Female

Vocal range: Alto – low E to belt C#5

 

CHRISTIAN BECHDEL

Alison’s older brother, and oldest of the three siblings. Must be able to sing harmonies.

Age: 10-15

Gender: Male

 

ROY/PETE/MARK/BOBBY JEREMY

Roy – a young man Bruce hires to do the yard work. Pete – a mourner who visits the funeral home. Mark – a high school junior. Bobby Jeremy – the lead singer in the band in Alison’s imagination.

JOAN

A student at Oberlin who openly identifies as a lesbian and exudes confidence. Has a dry sense of humor.

THE SECRET GARDEN

 

LILY

Mary’s aunt and Archibald Craven’s wife. Died of a tragic accident within her garden and metaphorically haunts the walls of Misselthwaite Manor.

MARY LENNOX

A ten year-old girl sent to live with her uncle, Archibald, when her parents die of cholera in India. Quite the curious explorer, and often finding herself in trouble. Stubborn and always fighting for what she believes in.

MRS. MEDLOCK

Archibald’s housekeeper. As cold as the Misselthwaite Manor.

  1. NEVILLE CRAVEN

Archibald’s brother. Trapped by the idea that he is responsible for the caretaking of Colin. Even though he was never loved back by Lily, he is still in love with her. This adds to his unwillingness to move on and leave Misselthwaite.

MARTHA

A faithful housemaid. Grew up near Yorkshire and has the accent to prove it. Although she is from a lower class family, her wisdom is often far beyond her age.

ARCHIBALD CRAVEN

Mary’s uncle and lord of Misselthwaite Manor. He has a hunch-back. Haunted by the past and afraid of the future, he locks himself away both physically and mentally. Mary painfully reminds him too much of his wife, Lily, who died ten years ago.

BEN WEATHERSTAFF

Head gardener. Secretly entrusted to take care of the garden after Lily’s death. Knows a great deal about the history of the garden and the grounds it sits on. He has worked for the family for many years. He calls himself “an old man.”

DICKON

Martha’s younger brother. Looks after the sick plants and animals within the Misselthwaite grounds—including Mary. He is a young man who is between the world of child imagination and adult reasoning. Befriends Mary and convinces her to take care of the Garden.

COLIN CRAVEN

Archibald’s ten year-old son. Spent his life in bed due to a heart condition. He is very stubborn and throws temper tantrums to get what he wants. He believes his father hates him for causing Lily’s death.

MRS. WINTHROP

Headmistress of a private school. Prides herself on nurturing girls with tempers. Mary seems to be more than she can handle.

Mary’s mother. A “dreamer” from the past who doesn’t understand how her sister Lily could truly love Archibald. Very loyal to her husband and refuses to leave India during the cholera outbreak that takes her life.

CAPTAIN ALBERT LENNOX

Mary’s father. Tries to send Rose out of India during the cholera outbreak.

SKY MASTERSON

A high-stakes gambler whose luck never seems to run out, and a wild card who surprises himself when he falls in love with the unlikeliest of women. Suave, smart, handsome.

NICELY-NICELY JOHNSON

Just like his name suggests, he is the nicest and cheeriest of the gambling crooks. High-spirited and a bit naïve, but sincere and genuine. Nathan’s loyal friend and lackey.

BENNY SOUTHSTREET

Nathan’s right-hand man and a gambler himself. Smart, slick, always moving and shaking, but with what he thinks are Nathan’s best interest at heart.

ARVIDE ABERNATHY

The bass drum and cymbal player in the Mission band, he is Sarah’s loving grandfather. Wise and sweet, he wants nothing but the best for her.

HARRY THE HORSE

A crook and gambler. He is a tough guy with dollar signs as his bottom line. Brings Big Jule into Nathan’s craps game and backs his cheating, but is also a man of his word in the gambling community.

  1. BRANNIGAN

A New York police officer who is on to Nathan’s illegal craps games and is dead-set on catching him. A tough, no-nonsense character.

BIG JULE

A big time craps player from Chicago who uses a gun and his own pair of rigged dice to bully his way into never losing. Tough looking. A bit of an oaf.

Age: 30-50

FREDERIC

A member of the Pirate Gang. He is unaffected and possesses an unself-conscious sex appeal. Youthful, genuine, and innocent, with a bit of a Buddy Holly vibe. Actor must be a strong mover and have a strong rock-pop voice.

MABEL

A student at the Major-General’s all-girls’ school. An astute young woman, she is sympathetic in nature. She and Frederic fall in love. Actor must be a strong mover and have a strong rock-pop voice.

PIRATE KING

The leader of the Pirate Gang. Despite his loud bark, he is actually a whole-hearted romantic with a soft bite. A handsome “leader of the pack” type – the kind who’s taken quite a few victory laps in high school. Actor must have a strong rock-pop voice.

MAJOR-GENERAL STANLEY

Headmaster of the private girls’ school. Possesses kindness, warmth, and good-humor. The love for his girls is undeniable.

Age: 55-65

Gender: Male

 

RUTH

Frederic’s housekeeper. A sneaky “Mrs. Potts” type, she is attractive enough for her age but cares very little about such things. She wants nothing more in life than to see Frederic happy, healthy, and by her side. Actor must be a strong mover and have a strong rock-pop voice.

KATE

A student at the Major-General’s all girls’ school. Quick-witted and rather sassy. Actor must be a strong dancer.

Age: 17-21

EDITH

A student at the Major-General’s all girls’ school. Though a level-headed girl, she is quite mischievous. The eldest of the girls. Actor must be a strong dancer.

Age: 20-25

Gender: Female

 

SAMUEL

The Pirate King’s right-hand man. Samuel is clever but easily manipulated and influenced. Actor must be a strong dancer.

Age: 18-25

Gender: Male

 

SERGEANT

President of the AV Club, the stereotypical “nerd” character. Awkward and incredibly clumsy, he and his club members are terrified of the Pirate Gang. Actor should be a strong dancer.

ENSEMBLE ROLES: PIRATES, SCHOOLGIRLS…all ensemble actors must be strong dancers.

Please prepare two contrasting 32-bar musical theatre cuts (songs from the shows are acceptable), and have the sheet music double sided in a binder for the accompanist. Please have a hard copy of your headshot and resume available for the audition.

Equity and non-Equity contracts available. Equity – Special Appearance Tier II. Non-Equity – stipend pay.

 

FUN HOME: Rehearsals begin August 13th and run Tuesdays through Fridays 6pm-10pm, Saturdays 12pm-5pm, and Sundays 1pm-6pm. There will be one long tech rehearsal on Saturday, September 20th from 12pm-11pm, with a one hour AEA-approved dinner break.

 

THE SECRET GARDEN: Rehearsals begin October 15th and run Tuesdays through Fridays 6pm-10pm, Saturdays 12pm-5pm, and Sundays 1pm-6pm. There will be one long tech rehearsal on Saturday, November 9th from 12pm-11pm, with a one hour AEA-approved dinner break.

 

GUYS AND DOLLS: Rehearsals begin March 10th and run Tuesdays through Fridays 6pm-10pm, Saturdays 12pm-5pm, and Sundays 1pm-6pm. There will be one long tech rehearsal on Saturday, April 4th from 12pm-11pm, with a one hour AEA-approved dinner break.

 

THE PIRATES OF PENZANCE: Rehearsals begin May 26th and run Tuesdays through Fridays 6pm-10pm, Saturdays 12pm-5pm, and Sundays 1pm-6pm. There will be one long tech rehearsal on Saturday, June 20th from 12pm-11pm, with a one hour AEA-approved dinner break.

FUN HOME runs September 12th through October 13th, 2019. Performances take place Thursdays at 7:30pm, Fridays at 7:30pm, Saturdays at 2:00pm and 7:30pm, and Sundays at 2:00pm.

 

THE SECRET GARDEN runs November 14th through December 22nd, 2019. Performances take place Thursdays at 7:30pm, Fridays at 7:30pm, Saturdays at 2:00pm and 7:30pm, and Sundays at 2:00pm.

 

GUYS AND DOLLS runs April 9th through May 24th, 2020. Performances take place Thursdays at 7:30pm, Fridays at 7:30pm, Saturdays at 2:00pm and 7:30pm, and Sundays at 2:00pm.
