DETROIT—Detroit Public Theatre (DPT) closes its third season with Birthday Candles, making its world premiere in Detroit May 10 through June 3, 2018. The play was commissioned by DPT, written by internationally acclaimed playwright and Grand Rapids-native Noah Haidle and directed by Vivienne Benesch.

Birthday Candles takes audiences on a magical journey with one woman, Ernestine Ashworth, as she travels from birthday to birthday, baking a life.
Detroit Public Theatre has put together a team of national and local artists for this world premiere. The cast includes Claire Karpen, Daniel Pearce, Hallie Bee Bard, Danielle Cochrane, Chris Corporandy, and Michael Brian Ogden. The creative team includes Michael Carnahan (scenic design), Shelby Newport (costume designer), Cecilia Durbin (lighting design) and Katie Hopgood (sound design).
Born and raised in Grand Rapids, playwright Noah Haidle’s work has been produced in New York, regionally, and around the world. His most recent play, Everything Beautiful, premiered last October at Munich’s Residenz Theater, and he is currently the playwright in residence of the National Theater of Mannheim.
Director Vivienne Benesch is in her second season as a company member and producing artistic director at PlayMakers Repertory Company. As an actress, Benesch has worked on and off Broadway, in film and television, and at many of the country’s most celebrated theaters.
