Dio auditioning for ‘Lost In Yonkers’

February 11, 2023

By America’s great comic playwright, Neil Simon, this memory play is set in Yonkers in 1942. Bella is thirty-five years old, mentally challenged, and living at home with her mother, stern Grandma Kurnitz. As the play opens, ne’er-do-well son Eddie deposits his two young sons on the old lady’s doorstep. He is financially strapped and taking to the road as a salesman. The boys are left to contend with Grandma, with Bella and her secret romance, and with Louie, her brother, a small-time hoodlum in a strange new world called Yonkers.

JAY – 16, our protagonist. The story is presented mostly through his eyes. Seeking a young looking actor age 18 or older to play 16 years old.

ARTY – 13 1/2, Jay’s brother. This actor must be capable of showing a lot of personality on stage. Remember that in the 1940s, 13 year olds weren’t as mature as they are today. He has a child-like energy.

EDDIE – their father, 41, newly widowed, he leaves his boys with his mother while he travels to try to make money to support his family.

BELLA – mid-thirties, neat and sweet and pretty, simple minded, she is a kind and nurturing spirit and she loves her nephews, Jay and Arty.

GRANDMA KURNITZ – Eddie and Bella’s mother, a big woman, buxom, with a strong and erect body, 70 odd years of age, she is strict and doesn’t show affection, speaks in a strong German accent.

LOUIE – her other son, 36, doesn’t look like he’d be the hugging type, he’s suspected to be involved in mob activity.

AUNT GERT – mid-to-late thirties, another of Grandma Kurnitz’s children, has an odd speech affectation – she says the first half of a sentence breathing out and the second half sucking in.
