Review: ‘Alice By Heart’ arrives at The Dio

Review April 08, 2024 David Kiley

PINCKNEY, MI–In the mesmerizing world of Alice By Heart, the musical adaptation of Lewis Carroll’s timeless classic presented here at The Dio Dining & Entertainment Theatre, “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland,” audiences are taken on a whirlwind journey through a Wonderland both familiar and refreshingly new.

With music by Duncan Sheik, lyrics by Steven Sater, and a book by Steven Sater and Jessie Nelson, this production at once pays homage to the beloved original while infusing it with contemporary flair and emotional depth.

Set against the backdrop of London during World War II, Alice By Heart follows the story of Alice Spencer (Alexa Huss), a young girl who finds solace and escape in the pages of Carroll’s fantastical tale as bombs fall around her. Transported into the dilapidated Wonderland of her imagination, Alice navigates the surreal landscape alongside her friends, confronting her fears, desires, and the harsh realities of war.

The strength of the musical, music directed by Frank Pitts and directed by Steve DeBruyne, lies in its seamless blending of the familiar elements of “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland” with the poignant themes of loss, resilience, and the power of imagination. Through captivating musical numbers such as “Down the Hole” and “Afternoon,” the ensemble cast brings Carroll’s iconic characters to life with infectious energy and emotional depth.

Ms. Huss shines in the role of Alice, infusing the character with both vulnerability and strength as she grapples with the challenges of growing up in a world torn apart by war. Her chemistry with the loyal and charming Alfred (Kolbe Pierzynowski), adds a layer of emotional resonance to their burgeoning romance.

The supporting cast delivers standout performances, with Antonio Vettraino’s Mad Hatter Xavier Sarabia’s Dodgy and Duchess, Ash Moran’s Queen of Hearts and James Fischer’s Angus and Caterpillar especially leaving lasting impressions. But the cohesion and delivery of the whole ensemble–Alexander Cousins, Annabel Pullman, Maddie Ringvelski, Kylie Scarpace, Lily Gechter, Anthony Pierzynowski– is excellent, capturing the whimsy and eccentricity of Wonderland while grounding the story in its emotional core.

Visually compelling and emotionally resonant, with a wonderful set created and built by Matthew Tomich, Alice By Heart is a testament to the enduring power of storytelling and the human spirit. Steve DeBruyne’s staging, helped by Assistant Director Lauren Brynn-Dunn, combined with Tomich’s atmospheric lighting and sound design and Norma Polk’s costumes creates a compelling experience that transports family audiences to a world where anything is possible. Nancy Koppin is Assistant Costume Designer and Eileen Obradavich designed props.

While “Alice By Heart” may be a departure from the traditional retellings of Carroll’s classic tale, it remains faithful to the essence of the original while offering a fresh perspective that feels both timely and timeless—with its enchanting music and richly imaginative storytelling.

Alice By Heart invites audiences to embark on a journey through Wonderland unlike any other, leaving them with a renewed appreciation for the power of imagination and the magic of storytelling.

Alice By Heart plays through May 12. The show is suitable for families, including grade-school level children. A reading of Alice In Wonderland before going will definitely help with the theatrical experience. The Dio serves a meal of fried chicken and pasta carbonara, which was very good too.
