Theatre Nova is the place to go for new plays, and their current production, “Spin,” is the latest work by Detroit resident Emilio Rodriguez. It is a series of snapshots taken in the lives of two teenage boys who meet in a homeless shelter for LGBTQIA teens. The plot is slight – consisting of dialog shared between the boys in their dorm room – but it is fully sufficient to pull us into the stories they exchange about the signature events in their brief lives.

While the story arc of this play is small – a hand cupped to scoop water or shaped into a fist – it somehow achieves the span of a rainbow. It deals with big themes in an intimate way: love and hate, acceptance and rejection, the choice to feel nothing or the active decision to care.
