“Two Detroits” is an innovative, high-energy production that invites audiences to reflect on the contrasting realities faced by young people in Detroit. Through compelling youth performances, this thought-provoking play delves into the tensions between privilege and adversity, exploring how the systems that separate us also reveal the common humanity that unites us.

The play is written by Teen HYPE alumna Mallory Childs, a graduate of University Liggett School and a current student at Spelman College in Atlanta. This powerful production is a reflection of Childs’ vision to use her art as a catalyst for raising awareness about the critical issues facing youth and young adults today.

"It's important to place ourselves in the shoes of others. While we may share similar paths, our experiences are often complex and unique,” said Mallory Childs. “I want people to learn the power of vulnerability—sitting down, listening and connecting with others in harmony. It's essential to understand that, though we may live differently, we all coexist in the same world. Reflecting on how we treat others and how we conduct ourselves in relationships is key to building empathy and unity."

Directed by Henri Franklin, “Two Detroits” examines the lives of two teens from different walks of life who must navigate the vast divide between their experiences within the same city. The play confronts issues such as privilege, access to education and how the zip code you are born into can shape your future. Through powerful storytelling, “Two Detroits” invites audiences to confront the hard truths about the systems that divide us and the shared humanity that can bring us together.

“Teen HYPE’s annual production serves as a platform for youth to express themselves and spark important conversations about the realities they face,” said Ambra Redrick, CEO of Teen HYPE. “This play not only reflects the work we’re doing with young people but also gives them the space to create, tell their own stories and contribute to the ongoing dialogue about social justice and change.”

In addition to providing a platform for youth voices, this annual play is a critical part of Teen HYPE’s ongoing commitment to youth and the community. For over 20 years, Teen HYPE has impacted more than 35,000 local youth through programs focused on leadership, education, wellness, and health. Teen HYPE offers youth the tools and knowledge to make empowered, informed choices that will guide their future success.

“Two Detroits” is more than just a performance—it's an exploration of the challenges and triumphs of Detroit's youth. It serves as a reminder of the importance of community, empathy, and social change.
