Rooted Here. Reaching Everywhere. GhostLight's Summer Season Launches June 25 - June 28

The Detroit based GhostLight Arts Initiative returns this summer with a three-part season that highlights new work, artist development, and community connection. Centered in Detroit but drawing artists and audiences from across the state, the lineup includes the GhostLight Gala, the Detroit IMPACT Conference, and the 6th Annual Obsidian Theatre Festival. The lineup follows the organization’s recent collaboration with Cabaret 313, Cabaret in Conversation: My Voice, My City, which brought Detroit-based performers together in an intimate exploration of identity, place, and personal storytelling.

Rooted Here. Reaching Everywhere.
GhostLight’s summer programming is grounded in a commitment to access, equity, and artistic excellence. With activities taking place at Wayne State University, key components of the season expand opportunities for artists and students alike, creating a bridge between professional practice and academic training. While deeply rooted in Detroit, the initiative continues to engage artists and audiences from across the state, reinforcing its role as both a local and statewide cultural driver. Each event serves as both a creative platform and a convening space—bringing together artists, audiences, and cultural leaders to engage in meaningful dialogue about the future of storytelling.
The GhostLight Gala: Art is Revolution

The season opens with the GhostLight Gala: Art Is Revolution, an evening of performance, celebration, and community impact.
Last year's inaugural gala, Limitless, launched the tradition of celebrating two Michigan artists each year with the inaugural George Shirley Award for Excellence in Artistic Performance and the Njia Kai Award for Arts Activism and Community Engagement.
This year’s event will continue that tradition and honor two influential figures in Detroit’s cultural landscape: acclaimed musician and composer Alvin Waddles, and arts leader and advocate Madelyn Porter.

The Gala brings together artists, supporters, and civic leaders for a night that highlights the power of storytelling while raising critical support for GhostLight’s programming. With live performances and tributes woven throughout the evening, the event sets the tone for a season rooted in both legacy and forward momentum.
This year's gala features performances by Lulu Fall, X. Alexander Durden, Bryana Hall, and Bihanna Everett with music direction by Brian E. Buckner.
26 Detroit MPACT Arts Conference: Building an Ecosystem
Launching in tandem with the Gala, the Detroit IMPACT Arts Conference returns in 2026. This year's conference includes a Young Artist Workshop in playwrighting and storytelling and a Adult Professional Workshop led by Kelli Crump and Lulu Fall.
The conference also includes a featured symposium on Friday, June 26, at the Gretchen C. Valade Jazz Center. The evening opens with a dynamic open fair, giving attendees the chance to move freely through the room, connect with fellow artists and arts organizations, and discover the breadth of creative work happening across the region. The heart of the Symposium is a keynote panel featuring Rep. Joe Tate, Detroit City Council Member Denzell McCampbell, and Co-Director of A Host of People Sherrine Azab.
Obsidian Theatre Festival: Black Stories. New Stage
Rounding out the summer, the Obsidian Theatre Festival remains a cornerstone of GhostLight’s artistic programming. Dedicated to amplifying Black voices and bold new work, the festival features a curated lineup performances featuring artists from Detroit and beyond.
This year's season features a bold new play SOUL OF THE SENATOR. Senator Jamie Carver prepares for a speech that could propel him to the White House, but a school shooting near his family home forces him to confront the consequences of the very laws he helped pass.
The season concludes with Back to Black: An Obsidian Cabaret featuring Detroit singer/songwriter Jynn Cole.
All Obsidian tickets are "Pay What You Can" as GhostLight continues its commitment to access and equity.
