SYNOPSIS
Once upon a time in Verona, there lived two gentlemen: Proteus and Valentine. They are the very best of friends. Each has a chap who works for them. Launce works for Proteus. Speed works for Valentine. Launce has a mischief-making companion, in a dog named Crab. Proteus has a best beloved, named Julia. Valentine wants nothing to do with love.
Valentine leaves to serve in the Duke's court in Milan Proteus’ mother thinks that’s a fine idea and sends her son to Milan as well. Julia and Proteus have a teary farewell, and exchange rings, pledging faithful love. Proteus leaves. Julia follows Proteus…in disguise, in men’s clothing. (Sound familiar?) Upon arriving in Milan, Valentine falls head over heels for the Duke’s daughter, Silvia. Silvia falls for Valentine, and rejects Thurio, her father’s choice for her husband. (Sound familiar?)
Proteus arrives in Milan. Proteus sets his eyes on his best friend’s sweetheart, Silvia. (Can you predict what happens? You guessed it.) Proteus falls for Silvia. Proteus offers the gift of a dog for Silvia. Silvia rejects Crab the Dog. Silvia wants nothing to do with Proteus. Or her father’s choice, Thurio. Silvia is completely devoted to Valentine. The Duke banishes Valentine to Mantua. Silvia follows Proteus. Proteus follows Silvia. Julia, disguised as a man, follows Proteus. On the outskirts of Mantua live a band of outlaw ruffians, Who confront this parade of passion-soaked lovers. And here, in the darkness of the woods, This almost-violent knot of madness unfurls With the light of deep recognition, True remorse, And the grace of forgiveness.
